Book Review | The Last Lunar Witch

Had to take a wee break from the digital world and missed a few blog tours along the way and today I am catching up on one.

The Last Lunar Witch
S.F. Henne

I only wanted to control my magic, but a single potion catapulted my life into chaosโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m Nyssa Thornheart, a witch with broken magic. I escaped to the big city to pursue my passion for alchemy, and hide from my coven until I fix my powers.

If my unstable gifts are exposed, they will be stripped away. To live without magic, thatโ€™s a fate worse than death. So I drank a long-forgotten potion in a desperate bid to harness my volatile powers.

But when Iโ€™m cornered by thugs, I unleash a rare and dangerous magic, tearing the veil between our world and a demonic realm. My new powers are growing stronger and resist every attempt to subdue them.

Now Iโ€™m a hunted witch, pursued by both demonic creatures and authorities determined to protect our realm from the threat I pose.

Can I master my magic, or will I have to sacrifice my powers before the city falls to demons?

Books like this are why I love being a part of BBNYA, when you find a story that speaks to you that you may not have come across otherwise.

I loved this story; it has a lot of supernatural elements that readers will have encountered before, but uses them in a very unique way. I was totally hooked on Nyssa’s journey to try and control her magic; the world, the magic system, and the magical community that is centred in the story was exciting, but it helped that it was also a very action-packed plot line. I enjoyed how unexpected a lot of it was; I never quite knew what to expect, but it also gave me quite a hopeful feeling throughout the book. I couldnโ€™t stop reading because it was interesting and entertaining.

I loved all the characters; they all made it a joy to read this book, especially when there is a quirky coffee shop with a mind of its own added to that list. I liked that they were all different species and had to try and get along to get through what was happening, but that they all became a team of sorts by the end. I feel my one little criticism would be that I maybe would have liked to have gone a little deeper with them, it is hard to get much past surface level with so much going on in the story, but it didnโ€™t spoil my reading experience.

This book was really well written, it was easy to follow, and the world and magic system were introduced in such a natural way. The pace was great, a little slower at the start as we are introduced to our main characters and the world they inhabit, but soon enough it was at breakneck speed as all the action starts to kick in. I did have a few questions left unanswered at the end of the book, but I see it is a series, so Iโ€™m sure they will be answered as the story continues.

The Last Lunar Witch is a really fun fantasy book, and Iโ€™m looking forward to finding out what happens in the next book.
