In this scene, Hadley is on a perfect date with her boyfriend, Nick. However, then she overhears some girls talking about how Nick has always had a crush on her friend, Simone, who just happens to be a gorgeous teen TV star. Hadley doesnโt know what to think–is her perfect relationship real or not?
โYou know, this is the first time we havenโt had people watching our every move,โ Nick said and then he wrapped his arms around my waist and smiled at me. I felt like I was melting and my cheeks flushed.
โYou know what would be nice?โ he asked. โA date where weโre alone. Donโt get me wrong, group dates are fun, but maybe we could do something with just the two of us soon.โ
I nodded. โDo you want to watch the football game Sunday at my house?โ
โSounds perfect,โ he said, and then leaned over and kissed me.
It was the first time we had a long kiss and it was exactly like all my YA novels described the perfect kissโlike the rest of the world had drifted away and there was just the two of
us and we were so happy.
Then he kissed my forehead and just held me for a minute and I never wanted to go back to where our parents were sitting. I just wanted to stay like this foreverโin a place
where everything was perfect and we were happy.
โOkay, one more kiss and Iโll let you go to the bathroom,โ he said, leaning over.
I went inside and went in the first stall.
โHow awkward is it that Simone Hendrickson is with Nick Jenkins and some other chick?โ said a voice a stall or two over.
โOh, I know! I wonder if thatโs to make her jealous or what? You can tell he still likes Simone so much. I mean, his arm around her? So sweet.โ
โItโs obvious he never got over his crush on her,โ the first girl said. โAnd theyโre together all the time.โ
โYeah, I think before she saw him as a brother, but now itโs clear thereโs something there.โ
โWell, he looks older since last summer. Itโs like he matured super fast.โ
โHe got hot. He was cute before, but now heโs hot.โ
โThe way he ran to her side when she was freaking out over the fun houseโoh my gosh, so sweet. I legit died when he held her hand.โ
โTheyโre adorable together, donโt you think?โ โYeah, but I feel bad for the girl heโs with.
Sheโs seems clueless about whatโs going on right in front of her face.โ
โMmhmm, but she looks young and dumb, so sheโs probably just happy to be with him and not expecting it to last.โ
I stood there feeling all the blood drain away from my face. I wanted to scream and cry, but all I could do was feel my stomach twist up. I prayed I wouldnโt throw up. Simone and Nick? No, this couldnโt be happening. She was supposed to be my friendโmy guide to get me through high school. I trusted her and counted on her to be there for me. And Nick
wasnโt just my boyfriendโhe was my best guy friend. And even though I hadnโt gotten the courage to say it to him, I was in love with him. He was the last thing I thought about before
I went to sleep, and just knowing he was out there and on my side, supporting me in everything I did, made life seem a little easier. I thought it was us against the world, and now, according to these girls in the bathroom, the โusโ I believed in might not even be real.
I blinked back tears and tried to convince myself they didnโt know what they were talking about, but they seemed so sure of themselves. The worst part was they hadnโt seen
me walk in, so they had no clue I was standing there listening to all of this. This wasnโt some set up to make me feel insecure or stupidโit was just some random thing where I overheard the worst thing I could possibly hear.
I waited for the girls to wash their hands and leave before I left the stall. Going into the bathroom I had been the happiest girl in the world, and now I looked at myself and I saw what they didโa clueless idiot who thought she had a dream, but in reality, she was just something to pass the time until her boyfriend could be with the one he truly liked.
Simone came into the bathroom then.
โHey, you okay?โ she asked. โYouโve been in here for a while. Are you feeling all right?โ
She seemed concerned, but was it real? Nodding, I focused on washing and drying my hands. I followed her out of the bathroom and saw Nick standing with his arms folded, talking to some people. He glanced over and smiled at meโor was it at Simone? I walked over to him, but she went to talk to some older guy. Nick frowned.
โWhy is she talking to him?โ he asked.
โWho? Why do you care?โ
He kept his eyes on them. โBecause Chance is her jerk of an ex. He never treated her well and sheโs gotta be stupid to give him the time of day. Iโve always hated that guy.โ
I shrugged. โThatโs her problem, isnโt it? Not yours.โ
He looked down at me. โYeah, but sheโs my friend and I donโt want her to get hurt again. You should have seen how upset she was the last time he dumped her. She cried for
hours.โ
Nickโs mouth was set in a firm line as he started to walk away from them. I had to half run to keep up.
โHeโs such a jerk. What does she see in him?โ he asked.
My feelings were all in a jumble after what I heard in the bathroom. And frankly, his knight in shining armor routine of running to Simoneโs rescue wasnโt putting my insecurities to rest at all.
