Audiobook Review | The Seven Dials Mystery

Decided to try another Agatha Christie book as I had a fancy for another mystery book.

The Seven Dials Mystery
Agatha Christie

Narrated by Mia McKenna Bruce

A practical joke goes chillingly, murderously wrong in Queen of Mystery Agatha Christieโ€™s classic detective story, The Seven Dials Mystery.

Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper, so the other houseguests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6:30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank then backfired, with tragic consequences.

For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words “Seven Dials” were to take on a new and chilling significance…

I wonโ€™t lie; the reason I picked this one up is because of the recently released series adaptation. I am keen to watch it, but I always like, where possible, to read the book first. Since this one didnโ€™t seem too long, and it was marvellously narrated by Mia McKenna Bruce, who is in the adaptation, I thought Iโ€™d give it a shot.

This is only the second Christie book I have read, and I think that because my first book was so phenomenal, I had a certain standard in mind. This one didnโ€™t quite match up to it.

I did wonder if itโ€™s because I didnโ€™t realise that there is a book that could be read before this, so Iโ€™ve maybe lost out on some character background. Donโ€™t get me wrong, it was still very good, but it didnโ€™t grab me from the beginning; it took a while for me to get into the swing of the story.

If Iโ€™m honest, I feel like when Bundle entered the story, thatโ€™s when it really started to come together for me. I think sheโ€™s a brilliant character, does what she likes and isnโ€™t afraid to get stuck in and put herself in dangerous situations to get answers. I loved how witty she is too, and her chats with her father were always humorous.

As for the mystery aspect that was definitely to the same standard, after a slower start to the story, suddenly there was so much going on. Every time I thought I knew the answers, I was surprised once again.

I love that I was kept guessing, and even the subtle clues that Superintendent Battle gave never actually helped me with any answers. There were so many twists and turns; it was brilliant.
