I have read a few books from this author before although it was a science fiction/romance series that I loved but I was expecting that I could pick this book up and enjoy it just as much even without the science fiction element.
It started well, there was a bit of action and mystery to get us into the story, which I enjoy because I do like my romance books to have a bit of adventure about them, unfortunately, it started to get a little slow after that. I think if I had had a better sense of the characters then the back and forth between them would have drawn me in I just felt like there wasn’t enough there yet for me to feel invested enough in the chemistry and it made a big portion of the book slow going.
Luckily though there were a few things that kept me interested enough to keep reading, Alina I couldn’t decide her motivations and could tell early on that there was something more to her than was being shown to us, also the mystery of why people were after Chloe because she didn’t seem interesting enough for such attentions, and why Nikolai’s relationship with his son was so strained.
I was glad I kept reading because toward the end of the book it started to read a lot more like the books I have enjoyed from this author, something clicked into place and I started to not want the book to end. I think maybe events in the story meant that the relationship forming between Chloe and Nikolai started to feel more realistic, until this point they had been too full on too quickly without the build-up of any actual chemistry so it was hard to feel it, but with the bumps in the road came the distance that was needed to make it a bit more believable.
I have to say that even though this book was not quite as easy to get into as I thought it was going to be by the end I was so invested and was looking forward to getting my hands on the next book in the series.
